Format of the Summer School

The summer school will last for six days with three different courses, running in parallel. The participants are expected to register in one of the courses and attend the full programme. The cultural programme of the summer school is mandatory and it is an important element for informal learning and networking.

Preparation of participants

In the phase of preparation, the participants will receive all the information material to get familiar with the Summer School format and the requirements of their specific course. They will be asked to fill in a preparatory questionnaire, where they will have the opportunity to express their own needs and expectations and they will be asked to prepare their own contributions, such as presentation of their organisation, information material for the exhibition as well as their ideas for future collaboration projects.

Ice-breaking / social and cultural activities

The week start with a common introduction and ice breaking session, where all participants of all courses will get to know each other and reflect on their learning plans. The coffee breaks will take place in one common space for all groups, so as to encourage networking and socialising. Finally, the participants will have the chance to socialise and create their networks during the social and cultural activities that are designed to facilitate social relations between participants, relaxation and acquaintance with local culture, history and gastronomy.

Attendance of courses

Each participant is registered in one of the three parallel courses and belongs to one group. They will attend their own specific programme, each group in its own dedicated room, while there will be common sessions of two or more courses. The common sessions may have the same content or may combine content with methodology.

E.g. Common sessions with the same content: The participants in the courses “Advance Innovative Learning Methods” with the participants in the course “Education for Sustainable Development” will attend the common session “Introduction to Participatory Design: A learning and school-community development process”

E.g. Common sessions that combine content with methodology: The participants in the course “Education for Sustainable Development” with the participants in the course “The world our classroom” will attend the common session “Design outdoors educational programmes – Climate change”.

Each group will have common sessions during the week, so as to maximise the opportunities for networking.

Open space

An open space session will be organised, where the participants will have the opportunity to establish contacts between them. The open space will be used for further creating networks and for creation of ideas for future projects and cooperation between them.

Connect with the locals

A “Connect with the locals” networking event will take place. Participants from schools and training organisations from Chania will be invited to attend this event and connect with their peers from Europe. These sessions will be used, in order to exchange experience and views with local schools and organisations and facilitate networking, between them.

Chania

The city of Chania is situated in West Crete and it is the second largest city of the island. Chania international airport hosts frequent flights to more than 100 European cities. The city is also accessible through its port that is connected with Piraeus on a daily basis.

A beautiful city inhabited since the Neolithic era, one of the cities of Minoan civilisation and Classical times, Chania played an important role, throughout Greek history. The old town and the old port of Chania surrounded by the old Venetian fortifications are between the most picturesque places in Greece and attract a lot of locals and tourists. Worthwhile visiting are: the “Agora” (market square), the nautical museums and archaeological museums, the House and the Graves of El. Venizelos – the notable political figure of Greek history. Chania coastline includes a large number of beaches offering blue waters and fine sand, in close proximity to the city centre. Besides, the region of Chania includes some of the most beautiful beaches worldwide, such as Balos Lagoon, Falassarna, Elafonisi and exceptional natural parks, the most famous being the Samaria Gorge.
